Actually from what I've read and heard, if your negotiating skills are up to snuff you can get them to take a chunk off what they would regularly charge people. So... if the first quoted price is too high you can haggle, so it really is "whatever they feel like"

Whatever you do, do not go to California Fitness.

I made that mistake and I really regret it.

I was pressured into signing a contract and I am trying to resolve it right now.
It has been a painful experience.

I would rather pay more money per month at a better gym than have to deal with this right now.
