Good Martial Arts classes on the island?

    Hi all,

Just moved here a few weeks ago. Always had an interest is learning martial arts, dabbled a bit here and there in the UK.

Anyway, I'm looking for some decent classes on the island. Ideally I would like to learn Chow Gar and have read that a very good teacher, Ip Chee Keung, resides here in HK. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find anything about his classes.

So I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for good classes. Preferably Chow Gar (Mantis) but really any style would be ok as long as the teacher is good.

I live in Happy Valley but anywhere on the island would be good.

    Cheers

    Anannya

If you really want to learn martial arts/self defense on the island, these are the best spots:
    1. The MTR at rush hour. Pick any station, but Central & Causeway Bay are usually the best.
    2. McDonalds on a weekday at lunchtime. Those 20 dollar lunch specials bring out the ninja in everyone.
    3. Any mall on any weekend at any time.
    4. The escalator at peak hours.
    5. LKF on any given night.

Not as traditional as Chow Gar, but if you want to learn Wingchun, or Krav maga, I can recommend the following. Both are in Central:

ChrisCollinsACTION | WingTsun, Pekiti Tirsia Kali, Fight Choreography and Personal Training with Chris Collins in Hong Kong <---Wingchun, but classes are very combat and street oriented. He's an ex-Marine, and a great teacher. Class is very small, and high intensity.

Krav Maga Hongkong <---Krav. Heard great things about the instructors and classes there.

If you're interested in Krav Maga, I wouldn't recommend the classes going on at Impakt. The instruction there is way off.

There are classes at Triquest in TST run by a guy named Joseph Lee. He's the highest ranked instructor of the ones in HK. Definitely has his shit together.

Thanks Sunfire! Triquest seems to have an excellent pricing scheme. Too bad I would only be able to go on weekends since it's in TST which is too far away for me.

How large are the groups, by the way? Are the lessons taught in English? Is it attended by foreign born Chinese and expats, or is it a generally Cantonese environment with locals who don't speak much English?

I have the same questions as ICEBreaker......if it's on the Kowloon side, would only really be able to go at weekends.

The Krav Maga classes at Triquest are in english. All but a few of the participants have been expats so far. Currently, the classes are only held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but I would recommend emailing the instructor to ask about weekends. If there's enough interest, I'm pretty sure he'd look into the possibility of adding more classes.

You can email him at [email protected]

Edit: I would just add that Triquest is located about a minute's walk from the nearest MTR exit in TST, so it's not all that complicated to get there.

Thanks a lot Sunfire for all the info. I think I will take a look at Triquest this weekend.

Hope to see Anannya there too!
