Surfing question- travel time to Big Wave Bay?

    Hi,

I am keen to learn about the easiest way to get to Big Wave Bay... we will most likely be staying in Causeway Bay and I am pretty keen to go early morning before work whenever possible.

Any advice on time to get there from Causeway bay would be appreciated.

Thanks for that... I imagine getting a cabe there is easy - what about getting home?

Any idea of $$ for a 27 minute cab ride?

I stay at Soho and pay around HKD 130 for a cab ride to Big Wave Bay, should be under HKD 100 from Causeway Bay.
You might have a problem getting a cab coming back, however there's a minibus every 10 minutes or so that heads to Shaukiwan MTR station (HKD 12). Either that or you might have to walk up to the main road.

You are aware that the number of days in the year when you get anything remotely like surfing waves is probably in single digits?

I have to admit we recently took a look at "Big Wave" Beach - would be ideal for Mini-Satay (aged 6) to learn to bodyboard but for an adult? there were several guys on big boards with all the gear - bobbing around looking like windsurfers who had recently lost their sails and had nowhere to go...It was nearly as flat as a pancake.

I'd have to concur. Got a few good days in April, but that's about it. I hear it gets better in September/October, but not holding my breath...

You've got to both admire and pity the surfers who bob about at Big Wave Bay. Firstly for their optimism, and secondly for knowing that optimisim is sadly misplaced.

I've been to Big Wave Bay maybe 20 times. Never have I seen anything that would justify a shortboard or even a longboard. It's okay for bodyboarding short distances.

It might be okay for waves if there was a typhoon rolling in.

I've had some pretty decent waves, although I went really early in the morning (around 7AM). Average swells of around 5 ft, which is pretty decent for the region.
Obviously not for professional surfers, but decent enough.

just like windsurfing, best times to do it when typhoon 3 and above is on. I went to big wave bay when there was a T8 to see if anyone was surfing and there actually were people doing it. Cool.

Brings back memories when I used to windsurf from before the gold coast time in Tuen Mun to the brother islands in front of Lantau in a T3. Zoooooooooom!!!!!!!!
