Hong Kong medalist not visiting Beijing?

It appears the mainland medal winners from London 2012 will be calling into HK to further encourage national pride.

Obviously no news on Wai Sze Lee going to Beijing for a reciprocal harmony event.

Not sure if that many mainlanders realise that HK is a separate sporting 'nation' (for now anyway)

You wouldn't have thought that if you were visiting here during the Olympics. First time I've seen so many HKers so happy to be considered part of China since I got here.

Only gold medallists will tour so that would rule Sarah Lee out...obv. anything less than gold doesn't rate recognition...

Well they do not have to bring the others since they have 38 Gold Medalists - quite a number already.

Canada I am sure is going to bring everyone (even non medalist) since with ONE gold medal the poor athlete would look a bit lonely

Actually I noticed quite some apathy toward China's medal winners this year, certainly when compared to 2008. There was hardly any talk about them between my local colleagues, in-laws,... The HK bronze medallist got way more attention in the media as well.

It's obvious the only reason the government is bringing these Chinese medal-winners here is to boost some China popularity after their failed national education fiasco. They already allocated the usual elderly homes and pro-Beijing schools to fill up the empty seats and wave some flags at the airport, the rest of HK will walk on by.

Astronauts weep in public in attempt to make Hong Kong love motherland – it’s worth a try

It would appear to be a way to encourage HK's to believe things from the Mainland are good with great economic development, long history, strong leadership, a growing technical military and a government that wins medals.

If HK had won a medal their probably wouldn't be an invite to Beijing to share the successes of HK's Governence over the years such as: Rule of law, free and open society, well developed and mature civil society, low taxes and generally efficient government, a functioning ICAC and burgeoning democracy.

I cant recall ever having medal winners trotted out to boost morale in Canada...we seem to feel fine about ourselves without that need...closest thing might be having Canadian players on the current Stanley Cup-winning team drag the cup to their home town over the summer and subjecting it to all manner of alcohol fuelled abuse...
