With the risk of setting Shenwen on another meltdown, Man Utd's successes was actually borne out of spending massively in the late 80s. This was before the mid-90s when the likes of Scholes and Becks came through.

I'd add Kagawa, Varela, Powell, Kuszczak and Foster for the simple reason that they haven't/didn't contribute anything positive (in most cases, because they/they're never played)

I didn't add Kagawa as i don't think he was overpriced based on his performances for Dortmund and the fact he's not given much of a chance. Powell is on loan at Brighton this season and is doing ok but at 19 he's one for the future so difficult to assess.

Foster was sold to Brum for 6 times what they paid for him.

I guess Kuszack you could add and i know nothing about Varela although 2.4m is a lot for a player with only one first team appearance to his name in his career so far.

We all know the purchase of Cantona won them their first four titles anyway

Some purchase has been strange, and I'm not going to even talk about Bebe.

Varela cab be argued is more one for the future. With the likes of Raphael, Smalling and Jones (the latter 2 shouldn't play there, but do get selected anyway), there's no room for him right now.

Hargreaves was a flop because of his constant injuries. When he had the odd small stints of being fit, he was a very good player.

De Gea is seen as the next best GK, alongside the likes of Coutouis (sp?).

Jones needs to nail down a place in the centre of defence, where he will grow to become a very good player, he needs to stop being played in various positions.

Felliani, I think he can do a very good job, if and only if Utds style of play changes. He Utd started playing with 2 sitting midfielders, with a 3-1 in front of them, then he will fit in.

ah, so no longer failures, just players who are overpriced

can't agree with de gea or carrick. the former is currenlty our most reliable player and the latter has given years of under-rated performances. and 3.5 million too much for a reserve keeper? can't be bothered justifying the rest except to say they helped deliver trophies.

by the way, where did you get that we paid 27 m for anderson? you are not just fishing, you are full blown trawling.

like I said, players are worth being over-priced when they win titles.

you are talking to someone who actually went to games in the 80s and can categorically say: you are talking bullshit.

yes, we made one or two big signings during the 80s (Robson and Pallister stand out) but did not spend massively and certainly not more than our rivals at the time. Compare for example our spending v Liverpool. In fact, even City regularly spent far more than utd did at that time (and indeed throughout the 90s and 00s).

if you can prove differently, I would love to see the numbers

I got the figures off soccer base.

No idea how accurate they are but It doesn't matter how good de gea is that's too much money to spend on any keeper. Most top level are of a similar ability IMO.
