Big thank you to Tom007 for his excellent contributions and photos on this thread. I stopped looking elsewhere for updates and scores, it was much more enjoyable and informative to open this thread and find out the latest scores and upcoming matches.

I apologize if this has been mentioned already. I learned something from this World Cup while following it here in HK. It rubs off on me as very weird that a lot of the locals will be supporting a national team in which they have ZERO affiliation with. I'm a Canadian and a Liverpool supporter (which Liverpool had the most capped players for England at this World Cup), but I didn't go jumping on the England bandwagon and that's because I am Canadian (even though Canada was not at the World Cup) or I would back Hong Kong because of my Cantonese roots. So just wanting to hear what you guys think. Like do the people in HK don't have any patriotic pride? surely they do because apparently over 500,000 of them were protesting on July 1st.

Interesting thought. Personally I think it is OK to cheer another nation's team on without losing any pride, in the same way it is OK for you, a Canadian, to support Liverpool. That's part of the fun... Being a neutral isn't as exciting. My favourite game of the world cup was cheering on Nigeria vs France in a game they eventually lost 2-0!

You can't know how/if a person has a connection with the national team they are rooting for just by looking at them . . . .

I'm a Yank but studied in Germany while in Uni. In fact I met my wife there. I have many friends in Germany and many German friends all over the world. So that's my connection to Germany and why I rooted for them after the US bowed out.

During Olympic hockey, I rooted for Finland once the US was out because I was a foreign exchange student there as a teenager (notice I didn't say "studied in Finland" because there wasn't much studying going on!) and still have good friends there. I also admire the hell out of that tiny nation for . . . well . . . simply existing, given their location between Russia and a once-militarily-mighty Sweden. They could have been easily gobbled up by one of their neighbors, but they survived with their culture, language and land mass intact - although smaller (I'm looking at you Russia, taking Karelea).
