So why did Spain crashed and burned so bad?

As for UK vs Uruguay, I'll root for the English this time, I have a soft heart for those under-performing losers, because they do deserve better...

    Colombia vs Ivory Coast 2:1
    Japan vs Greece 1:0

And in the hope that England pull their finger out...

    Uruguay vs England 1:2
No you picked Spain to beat Chile for starters.

    Australia vs Holland 0:2
    Spain vs Chile 1:0
    Cameroon vs Croatia 0:2
    Oh and

    Brazil vs Mexico 2:0
    Russia vs South Korea 2:0
    Belgium vs Algeria 3:1
So you are at most 4 from 7

    Yes, my bad.

But on second thought...well, aren't the Scots, Welsh and Irish watching this too? Or are you suggesting they are rooting for England to lose and follow Spain out of the World Cup?

And why did Spain crashed and burned so bad?

Someone get Watercooler his amnesia tablets.

One of the most defining moments of Euro 96:

I know. UK vs UK was such a great match!

    Yes. you're finally getting it...

It is a bit like me referring constantly to Canada as 'Northern America'.

Er, Northern Ireland... (but, admittedly, they are interchangeable when they choose to be).

But of course they don't want England to win the World Cup. Can you imagine all the gloating they would have to endure?

Because to win, you need skill but also HUNGER.

And when in 6 years the same players (more or less) have won 2 European Cups and one World Cup, the Hunger is not here anymore.

France did the same. Great Euro 96 (3rd) / WC 98 (winner) and Euro 00 (winner) and then they crashed bad in 2002.

The only teams that manage (sort of) to go thru these low phases quicker are Brazil, Germany and Italy.

Historically Brazil, Germany and Italy have had a far better production line than the likes of Spain and France, so are used to evolving their teams with no great loss in quality.

Spain and France can't say the same - the next crop of French youngsters were never quite the same quality (and even more divisive), and the old guard weren't hungry anymore. Led to some pretty horrible and embarrassing performances.

Spain are at the same juncture. They have a few excellent youngsters but they're nowhere near the level of the current first team. The issue is that there are at least two tournaments left in most of the starting eleven (barring Xavi and Xabi Alonso).

It's going to be a mammoth job for anyone to try and get Spain competing again.
