Anyone up for FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix – HK

    Hi people,

China, Thailand, Italy and Japan are playing for FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix – HK 2014 in August 8th-10th, very limited tickets left. I'm keen to go one of the games or all. Would like to go with volleyball lovers.

Hope to hear from you all x

I really wanted to take the kids to that as I like to show them different sports but the ticket prices were a bit too steep for our liking.

I'm glad they sold the tickets but they were not cheap and certainly not affordable for most of the normal families in Hong Kong.

I'll be going on Sunday (the final day)-albeit way up in the bleacher seat section.

In a professional sports-starved city like HK, I enjoy every opportunity to watch spectator sports (yes, there is the local soccer league and the Rugby Sevens, but hardly anyone attend the former and the latter only occurs for 3 days in March, HK needs more regular pro sport events throughout the year). It doesn't hurt that I did played a bit volleyball back in my school days, although I never was good at it.

You should have posted this earlier and we could meet up, but now we'll likely be seating far from each other so that's gonna be hard.

As for anyone going together, only the more expensive front-row tickets are left, I bought one of the last "cheap" seats, so not sure how many are willing to shell out HK$650 for the front-row seats or HK$350 for those just behind the front row section (for Sunday's final matches anyway-Fri or Sat will likely be a little cheaper, although probably not by much).

Well I'm not telling you to stop asking folks here whether they are interested to join you, who knows, maybe some are, just saying it might be a little tricky since only the most expensive tickets are left.

To help you out, I went one year to the volleyball grand prix here in HK and it was fantastic. The volleyball competition was great, but the organizers also put in their effort to drum up a friendly but passionate atmosphere. The locals who are usually so reserved and button-up suddenly became wild fans cheering at the top of their lungs for their teams. Anyone who wants to go with the OP should go, never mind the price, after all, its not like you are gonna pay it every day, no harm giving it a shot.

    There, hope that helps, OP.

I saw both the Italy vs Japan and China vs Thailand match on TVB Pearl just now. Japan pushed Italy hard to create a 5 set game, but in the end they lacked the height to block the Italian spikes. In the China vs Thailand game, it was a close first set with Thailand taking China to a deuce before China prevailing eventually. Thailand did win back the 3rd set but they ultimately lost to China in the 4th set. Sunday (the day I will be attending) should be interesting.

Well I saw the final day's match and wow, it was worth every bit the ticket price. Th first match was Japan vs Thailand. Japan is a traditional Asian volleyball power but they haven't been playing well in the tournament so far, because they have a lot of new players. Thailand is also a strong Asian volleyball powerhouse but today they lost to Japan 3-1. The crowd was relatively quiet during that match but man did they turn up the volume for the China vs Italy match.

The whole arena roared when a point was scored. The noise was deafening. There were multiple human waves going around. Fans cheered wildly. I guess this is where those normally stiff and uptight locals let loose. Oh and China won by the way, beating Italy 3-1.
