Actually Hong Kong has played China several times, including the World Cup qualifiers.

If I remember China had to win in 2004 by 6 or 7 goals to qualify. Some on the mainland were calling on Hong Kong to do their "patriotic duty" and let the PRC win so they could go through. Or maybe that was a different year.

Evidently, either the HK team didn't, or even if they did perform their "patriotic duty", the Chinese team was so lousy they couldn't score enough goals to qualify.
