Beautiful, tenacious play results in a Dempsey header to put the U.S. ahead 1-0. 22"

Catalyst for that goal was Bobby Wood who has been a difference maker on the right side for the U.S.

Dempsey bidding for a second. He gets a good shot off with a left foot but the Ecuador GK makes the save low. 27"

Ecuador countering aggressively into the offensive zone every opportunity they get. They're very close to creating a good scoring chance. Putting lots of pressure on U.S. defensive to make good decisions/plays quickly.

Physical play picking up as well as Ecuador trying to get the U.S. out of their comfort zone. John Brooks nursing a knock and Woods just taken down hard. Still no bookings. . . . and just as I write that, Antonio Valencia karate kicks John Brooks in the thigh and earns a yellow.

U.S. with a counter and ECU GK forced to make the save. The two saves he's made have been low. Maybe the U.S. should shoot high. Previous to this chance, ECU carrying the play for the past 6-7 minutes or so. We're at 43"

+2 minutes . . . and as I predicted, an ECU fast break yields a golden chance forcing the US GK to make a good save and concede a corner but the score holds at the whistle. US 1-0 ECU.

Cards are flying. Official playing the part of casino blackjack dealer. ECU player A. Valencia gets a yellow (his second of the match). Jermaine Jones with a RED (stupidly put his hand in the face of a ECU right in front of the ref). US player Woods with a yellow (his second so he's out of next match should U.S. advance). We're playing 10 vs. 10. I think this favors the faster, ECU squad.

Wow. Crazy developments. I'm sure more drama to come. 57"

First sub of game as ECU player Noboa hobbles off with a leg injury. Gaibor on as replacement. U.S. is making more mistakes. ECU pressing harder. Would expect to see some fresh legs subbed in soon.

Very dangerous play Paredes challenges studs at neck level on Woods. He earns a yellow for his recklessness. 65"

USA Score a second goal. Again Woods did the heavy lifting. Dempsey to Zardes who taps it in.

    USA 2-0 ECU. 66"

Bedoya with yellow at 72". He's out next match should score hold and US advances. USA will be without Woods, Jones and Bedoya next round.

Arroyo pulls one back for ECU. Set piece from the free kicked set up by Bedoya's yellow. USA streak of clean sheets soiled.

USA using first sub. Dempsey out. Beckman in.

    USA 2-1 ECU 75"

Valencia with a golden chance and guides a header wide left 77". Wow. That should have been the equalizer. Wow. US looks tired. ECU energized and charging hard.
