    More on the Whampoa closure:

More discomfort is being felt by California Fitness, which is having to shutter - at least temporarily - its Whampoa branch.

That comes in the wake of a liquidation application by a former director of its parent company and with California Fitness announcing it was looking for a buyer.

At Whampoa, the message yesterday was: "As the landlord indicates its intention to stop supplying some essential services to the premises, it is with regret that our club will be temporarily closed from July 4."

That was on a notice posted outside the center.

California Fitness staff confirmed the closure but stressed that services at its other eight branches were not affected and Whampoa members could go to any of them. The branch, originally in Phase 2 of Whampoa Garden, moved to the present site in Phase 4 in March.

Sounds like they might have been late on rental payments in Whampoa??

I have to second cwbguy's opinion, someone has to be pretty naive to drop money upfront on long (6 year?!) contacts without doing some basic research.

And if you're new to HK and don't have time to examine everything, just sign up to a year like hk_katherine and limit the potential loss. Though "Ms. Fong" sounds like a local name.

Through some random searches, other companies that seem to be associated - JV Fitness, Fitness Holdings Asia Ltd...

Not sure if memory serves me right, but Jackie Chan was involved with California Fitness at one point .. either before or after the sale to the US company?
