Oh man, HK doesn’t sound like a place for cycling... might as well just get a indoor trainer...

HK can be a decent place for road cycling if you are very good and very committed. Like 5am meet ups to avoid traffic and extremely hilly routes.

Otherwise yes, indoor trainer and a bit of cycling around the south side of HK island and/or up to new territories.

5AM... nope... The new Wahoo Kicks Bike is getting very tempting but size of flat is not going to work...

the new territores is the best place to cycle, ie, yuen long where you aunt lives, over 85km of dedicated cycling paths and there is no cars there, street lighting, toilets every 1.5km, can machines, hk island is a death trap if you plan to cycle on the roads, i personally love fanling to taipo, if you into trial biking, plenty of hills to do this, also even if you find a place in HK island for HK$6k, you barely fit bicycle let alone yourself

If you want to go leisure biking, sure there are places like Taipo. If you want to do serious biking, be ready to constantly be in the way of cars, and basically risk your life, not to mention constantly breathing in the fumes of the cars passing you. I don't think HK is a great place to bike as an enthusiast, but many do it. Many go out to the new territories as mentioned above.

What do you guys think of cycling on Castle Peak Road, between Tsuen Wan and Tuen Mun ? is it safe, if you've got blinking lights and a highvis jacked ? only during the day time (on the weekend).

Looking at sections on it on Streetview, you'd have to be a bit suicidally inclined. 2-3 lane dual carriageway. Do people commonly ride there?

I can't remember if you can ride all the roads inside the big AFCD park just to the north of that section of road, but it would definitely be a safer option. Some of the corners are a bit tight though and you probably can't build up as much speed.
