The son was just telling me about this. His daughter was also with him.

    RIP.

RIP to all 9 people lost in this tragedy

    VASAviation -
A Sikorsky S-76B Helicopter (N72EX) performing flight from Santa Ana KSNA

was transitioning to the west of Van Nuys KVNY along the 101 Freeway in very marginal weather when suddenly crashed in the area of Calabasas.

All 9 onboard have reportedly perished - the five-time NBA Champion Kobe Bryant and his daughter were passengers of that flight.

I think the pilot is lying about visual flight rules conditions being met. He says he's flying at 1400' but the sky is overcast at 1100'. It's possible but the layer of clouds would have to be very thin. In any case he was flying in poor weather conditions...

Probably wasn’t instrument rated or current. He requested SVFR but ended up in IMC and crashed. There was a witness who broke it down pretty well. https://youtu.be/28QYy8lrww8

I don't think this is correct.
From the ATC tape: he was cleared for SVFR from the beginning (because when he announced to the controller at 0:40 that he was in SVFR conditions he received no objection), with SVFR clearance further discussed at for example 1:45, 1:54, 2:03, 2:41, and met with no objection from the controller.

More importantly: he f*cked up and found himself in weather conditions he couldn't handle (I translate for the good folks of this forum who may now know what IMC-conditions mean)
