    wilderness survival in HK

So, i was hiking solo. At about 2 hours of hiking into the mountain (i walk slow).
i ran into a group of hikers. One had blood running down his forehead. He was dazed and confused looking. He fell down the steep trail. It was steep and very loose/slippery in some places. We had good phone signal there. But nobody there was tech savvy enough to know how to get our exact position to the rescuer. And nobody know any medical skills.

Anyway, after like 30 minutes on the phone, they figured some way to get their location. Then I left the group. After 45 minutes of walking, i heard a helicoptor hovering over the mountain behind me.

what is the proper ways to let rescuer know where you are?

Get vaccinated with the BioNTech shot.. You get a built in tracker.

Share a photo of what happened for us to believe you.. And verify the GPS location embedded in the photo.

GPS coordinates would be good or share your location on your phone if you have good service. It'll get them pretty close. Then whistle and/or flashlight?

Lots of ways, one of the best and simplest is to use the app 'maps me' - It's free and fantastic for travelling all over the world.

It requires no data, and no cell phone signal (but works a little more accurately and faster if those are available). You need to download your local map when you do have signal (All of HK is one Map, the UK is split into several, yemen 1, Saudi Arabia 2) etc

This means for example, you could get your GPS coordinates whilst going down in MH370 (though you may not be able to send them to anyone of use).

Always quote the last track marker number you passed, this gives the rescuers a better idea where to look.

No one carrying any first aid at all?

GPS should work, but the last time we needed a helicopter the crew told us they'd prefer HK grid coordinates.

You can get them using this app on Android. No idea if there is something like that on Iphone. It's a very weird standard called "HK 1980 Grid System"

The Lands Department has an app "MyMapHK" which features a SOS button that allows you to send a sms with your coordinates to a contact. The police has an emergency sms number "992". Although you are supposed to pre-register for it I assume in an emergency it would work anyway.

Random things you learn every day .. 992 can be used for fax too.

    and this...

Use 50222 SMS Hiker Tracking Service and GPS Hiker Tracking ServiceWith the support of mobile service operators, the Communications Association of Hong Kong (CAHK) has launched the 50222 SMS Hiker Tracking Service (50222 Service). Hikers can use the service by sending short messages to a designated number 50222 to report periodically the unique numbers of Distance Posts they encounter along their hiking trails. This will help keep track of their positions. For example, sending the number M001 means the hiker is at the first Distance Post of the MacLehose Trail. In any event that a hiker is lost, rescue parties can make use of the data stored in the system of 50222 Service to improve the time and success rate of search for the lost hiker.

GPS Hiker Tracking Service has been launched by CAHK due to increasing popularity of smartphones. You have to install the Enjoy Hiking app, developed by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, or the Security Bureau’s Safeguard HK app onto your smartphone. Before your hiking trip, launch either of the apps and activate its Hiker Tracking Service function. The GPS system will then auto feed your tracking locations and record the relevant data at the service centre. The data can be retrieved and used to facilitate rescue if any need arises from an emergency situation.
    No clue if it works...

(No clue why I'm reply to what sounds like a completely fabricated story written in Tammy Tam style..)

    Second this

They have the longitude-latitude coordinates of all trailpost in HK, not just for the big four bit also all of the smaller country trails (they're actually available online, accurate to 50 metres or so after the level of rounding)

Well, i could not figure out how to display GPS coord when i was standing under the sun. i never had to do this. My roomate just showed me how to do it on Google Maps.

As i understand there are different format for GPS coordinates. If you give the wrong format, it might let your rescuer to wrong location.
