Whenever Arsenal don't win you can be sure something happened that Mikel Arteta has never seen before in his life.

Arteta has never seen a ball like that before in his life.

The narrative that Arteta uses excuses has already been set and opposing fan bases gladly lap it up. But that's sports journalism. The media companies exploit the human psyche. Not every person is going to be self-aware enough to actively resist falling for it, or even capable. It's the same compulsion that leads to gambling addictions, porn addictions, etc. People can become genuinely addicted to that feeling, be it outrage, the rush, delirium, etc and these companies know that and will leverage those feelings for clicks and money.
Did he mention the ball in any previous rounds of the EFL cup when they won their games?
He always has an excuse and saying "I'm not using it as an excuse" after using it as an excuse, means f**k all.
He's deflecting attention away from crap performances from a team who played relatively decent football until they became a Frankenstein's monster of a team this season.
That said, most decent managers get called out on their bs excuses. Ferguson, Wenger, Klopp, Pep whoever. Maybe if he actually wins something meaningful he will mellow.
Arsenal are 2nd having accrued the same points tally at this stage as last season. Doing so with far more key injuries and finding ways to keep the same pace.
Pretty good for frankenstein's monster.
That means they turned into an ugly footballing team in order to be at best, just as effective as last season, or in all probability, worse.
It must be somewhat comforting at this stage at least to imagine they will have a similarly remarkable second half of the season.
