Back on the subject of trails "closed" by landslips, has anyone been along the old route of the Keung Shan Country Trail (between markers C1307 and C1315 on the Countryside Maps up to Edition 4 of the Lantau Island sheet) since it was officially closed in 2008? I'm think of walking that as part of a trip from Tai O next week, but I've no idea how badly disrupted the path was by the landslips.

Is that the one that goes over Ginger Hill or sidles around it? We did Nong Ping to Tai O in December, going over Ginger Hill, and the route was fine (abit washed away in some spots, but not bad), but I was never entirely sure which path we were on as I was not leading.

I can't see anywhere on my map referred to as "Ginger Hill". Do you know the Cantonese name? The one I'm referring to runs along the eastern side of the peninsula running down to Fan Lau about half way up the side (in other words, not the catchwater road that's lower down and not the bit of the Lantau Trail that runs along the ridge). It is the blue line on this map. The rerouted path of the Keung Shan Country Trail is shown as the khaki circles.

ok - I think the track I was on is probably the one running along the ridge just parallel to your blue track as we certainly climbed on it .. so cannot help. I would recommend that path as a great view though and it certainly went to Tai O.

Ah right. Well in that case, that's probably the path I have in mind. Bit of a long way round from Ngong Ping to Tai O though.

THat would seem to define our hiking routes Never go direct when there is a longer, more scenic (or difficult) route.
