    New rules for cross-border driving?

    Just saw this article:

    RTHK English News

Reading between the lines, there is some new scheme for HK drivers who want to cross the border for leisure.....how exciting if it's true!

Yep, just googled 'ad hoc cross border licences', maybe available under quote in March...

They've been talking about it since 2007. Was originally supposed to start in 2009. Always the worry it would go both ways and that's being dealt with legally at the moment.

Well it will be fun when they come the other way in phase 2. They'll be a bit of carnage and the air will get worse.

Wonder what the situation will be when the bridge to Macau opens? Access for both sides from the off? direct traffic from Zhuhai included?

That bridge will be a white elephant from the off if nothing changes, apparently there are very few vehicles that 'currently' would have the credentials to cross it.

It's absurd in my view, in England drivers can come and from and to Europe...here they still need a visa....it's manageable.

In reports today it was stated that local 5 seat cars will be able to get a 7 day permit. 7 seat cars and cars on finance are not permitted.

For costs, HK$500 for temporary permit, HK$1,900 for compulsory course on mainland traffic rules and road network plus insurance and charges from institutes that guarantee the car crossing the border would be the same one returning.

I have some predictions about this. You'll need to be a PR and it will take forever until you will be able to take that (Cantonese only) course on mainland traffic.
