    Driver License

    Hi,

I have a friend in Vancouver who has his B.C. driver license suspended. He is planning to move to Hong Kong but he will need to drive.

Could he just apply for a new driver license here or will he have to wait untill it is suspended. If so what is needed? Will he have to sit the written examination or just do the practical and where can he get the forms?

    Thanks in Advanced

If he is "hiding" the Canadian licence then he's going to have to start from scratch here - written and practical tests.

I noticed on the website of TD that it says HKID required to obtain a HK DL. Is there any way to by pass this? And do we need to take a road test again? I have a class 5 from Canada and I have been driving for 7 years. However, I am not a HK resident, just a visitor. Am I still able to apply for a HK DL? How long does it take to apply and receive a HK DL?

If you don't have your HKID then why do you need to take the HKDL..? you can drive with your foreign DL or and international one.

I thought that you don't need to take the driving test in HK. I heard that you can just obtain a HK DL by showing that you have a Canadian DL. But, I am not sure if you need to have a HKID to obtain that HK DL. Can somebody please clarify?

Visitors: Can drive in Hong Kong with many foriegn licences, including Canadian as they are here for a short time (not over 90 days for Canadians)

Residents: Cannot drive with foreign cards and therefore need to apply for the local card which is pretty easy using your Canadian licence.

Clarification: No HKID=No HKDL because you don't need a local DL.

How about a British licence? Can it be used to obtain a HK licence without taking the tests again? Obviously without losing the British licence as we may need that again in the future.

Yes. Yes. No, it's not an exchange.

Does that 90 days get reset every time they re-enter the country? Just like the visa?

Yes, as long as they remain a visitor.
