Car made in 2000, only 3rd party insurance offered?

We are hoping to buy an older car - made in 2000, and the insurance agencies we contacted say that they would only be able to give us third party insurance since the car is now 7 years old. We really want to get comprehensive insurance as otherwise will be quite tentative about driving the car anywhere (nervous drivers!) -is this quite standard practice in your experience?

If so, then we should obviously look at buying something newer so very grateful for your input. Thank you

Did you contact www.kwiksure.com and the auto association?

I do think you can get comprehensive - will have to check our policy.

Thats a bit weird, our Toyota MPV, which is also a 2000 year build, 2001 first registration. Kwiksure, being an experienced insurance brokerage, did not face any problems arranging full comp for it...

Hong Kong Insurance companies do have some very unique, if not down right weird criteria basing what risk you are, by what job you do.... I kid you not lol...

It's deemed that a lesser qualified person, driving a cheaper/older car , is a much higher risk on the road, than somebody much better qualified, driving around in his latest Aston Martin DB9.

Unless ? You're a HK actor or popstar, then the insurance company wont even insure you at the mere mentioning of the word 'artist'....The very same thing will happen, if you mention 'house wife' where it lists occupation on the insurance form.

If you speak to Anthony Hill on 3113 1331 http://www.kwiksure.com/newweb/, he will comprise a best plan of attack that will get you comprehensively insured, with time spare for afternoon tea and buns....

No different to every other insurance company in the world though.

    Ummm no Jimbo, not really....

You'd be in breach of most western country anti discrimination laws if it were known that an artist couldnt get insurance over a florist for example...

Insurance companies mainly concentrate on age group ( driving experience ) the configuration/purpose of the vehicle, coupe or saloon, wether it has a turbo fitted, and the neighbourhood by which the car is garaged, based on upto date car theft data.

It's not biased toward what job you do, or your level of scholastic achievements.

Certainly not true for the UK. Employment is definitely taken into account there for motor insurance, as is sex (there are companies which insure only women, for lower premiums, since they have fewer, smaller accidents).

I don't know of any country which has laws against discrimination by employment. Could you identify even one for us?

It certainly is in the UK. Journalists for example pay astronomical prices. Also other factors like being married, having kids all play a part. There is a very simple 20 group rating for cars in UK although most insurance companies internal groupings can be over 100.
