    Changing Registration Mark

Hi, In the process of buying a car which has a personalised mark on it which the present car owners are going to keep. Does anyone know the process and the cost involved in obtaining a new registration mark?

    Thanks.

When you go to the transport department to do the transfer ( you;ll need to pay $1000 first ) of ownership with the owner of the plate, he will need to put his registration mark on hold which he can do for a period of not more than 12 months. Then once thats done they will issue you a new plate number for about $700 or $800hkd cant remember exactly, but its around that amount. Then they'll issue you the Vehicle registration document in your name with the new registration mark on it. Once you have done that, head to the nearest auto accessory shop and get new plates printed with the new number ( the Transport department doesnt issue plates ) which they will make on the spot for you and then attach them to your Fiat.

Retention can only be done in a couple of the transport department facilities - Admiralty and Cheung Sha Wan. The current owner will have to pay $560 to retain his number, and apart from your $1000 to transfer the car you wont have to pay anything extra.
