Been quoted 1000 for the pads and 1000 for smoothing out the rotors and 500 labor. So all in 2,500. Seems expensive, right?

what car is it would help
Once I did smooth the disk myself. Pad was running a bit low and the disk then had metal contact.
Lift wheel in question up
Took of wheel
Put car in in 5th gear with engine running (wheel spins fast enough)
Hold sandpaper on the disk
Worked perfectly!
That works of course only on wheels connected to the engine.
2500 ? not overly expensive.. but maybe the pads are inflated price a bit?
i replced rotor an new calipers for my subura for 3000 fitted.. ( not new parts but good used parts )
You could easily buy a jack, grinder and sanding disks for 1K or less and do it yourself. Not a difficult job.
it's for a lexus rx300
seems right for a large suv
Recently had an oil change and the garage did not hesitate to tell me that I need a host of things that need replacing including my coolant which up to this day remains in the middle temperature range once the car runs for 15 minutes.
Anyways, they also asked me to change my brake pads and rotor. Not sure on your situation, but brake pads these days are often attached to a warning light on your dash board indicating when it needs replacing. There also is a metal sheath on the brake pad once it approaches a quarter of an inch (6mm) in thickness. Once you break and heart metal grinding, that's an indication your brake pads are running thin.
In terms of rotor, you can do s visual indirection for pits and cracks. If you see visible pits, sand it. If you see cracks or feel warpage (tested via hard braking and looking for vibrations), you need to get it replaced. Should run you $1500-2000 for new rotors.
Hope this helps. Disclaimer on not saying that you should put your safety in jeopardy, but garages telling you to replace your brake disc and pad are one of their revenue streams.
