Good afternoon,
I have to get an international driving license to drive in Australia.
I know that I have first to convert my national one to a HK one.
But then, do you know how to do? Cost, delay?
Thanks for your help
Stephanie.

Go to the transport dept in Admiralty with application form and $900 they will give you license 5 days later.
As said, go to United Centre (above Admiralty MTR) to the Transport Dept and pay the fee, but mine was done in one day...a few hrs because my prev. licence had lapsed and I had to show a letter of proof of eligibilty in an interview, but if your lic. is valid, the conversion to HK and then aquisition of Intl permit shouldn't take 5 days...
If you're from one of the approved countries
Transport Department - Appendix C
You can transfer...
You don't need an international licence if your current licence is in english.
Assuming your licence is not in english, can't you apply online for an international licence (from your home country)? That may be easier and cheaper.

I have checked with the Australian Embassy and they said the international one is necessary even I have mine translated and approved...
I will check if I can do on line or not (in home country)...
Regarding the HK transportation dept, I have been on their website: there is everything regarding obtaining the HK one but nothing for the international one. Anyway I will ask both at the same time if I go. I just wanted to anticipate papers, fees, delays..
Thanks for your help!
What is your national license? I have driven in Aus on a UK licence and an NZ licence with no drama at all (even tho the UK one does not have a photo on it). If you had a friend in your national country who could take your license to the local dept (AA in many countries) and get it done that might be easier for you. You'd need to send them a photo too....
You're can drive as a tourist in Australia on any driving licence that's in English. A HK licence on its own is fine (as is a US or UK one, for example). So your choice is to get a HK licence or to get a French-issued IDP (but if you are resident in HK then I ewxpect that might be difficult since you should have converted your licence to a HK one).
lots of info in the notes attached to the actual application available from the TD site
