Japanese vs. European vs. American vs Korean used cars

I need to buy a used car. Budget around 70k. (Two years ago I bought an X-type Jaguar, which turned out to be not a great decision, and I just sold it).

I am looking for a reasonably aged car, which I can run for maybe 5 years without spending too much on maintenance or losing too much in terms of resale value.

Not sure if I should buy Japanese (Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda), or European (Merc, BMW, VW, Audi) or American (Ford) or Korean (Hyundai). These are the brands I normally see on the road, and hence I listed them here.

    Any advice??

In terms of reliability, instead of relying only on brand name, you should consider factors such as age, mileage, service history, number of owners and so on.

Get an Alphard 70K will get u a 2004/5 model. very good reliability, spacious, powerful V6 3L engine.

70K wont get you a Toyota Pick up.

Running costs would be high on an Alphard though. What's your average monthly expenses on petrol and stuff?

do you need a 7 seater people carrier or a low cost family medium size car?

get a less desirable ( to hk locals yet high depreciation) , yet decent equipped and reliable ford focus, for HK$70K, you can get a 2.0 ( high equipment and pretty nippy at 144bhp ) 2010-11, probably done less miles, assume 50K KM.

Running cost is much lower ( probably 60% lower) than a petrol guzzling people carrier, ie, weekend drive only, full tank at $750, will do you 500-550km, but a full tank alphard 3.0 will probably cost a full tank at 1500, but less miles than the the ford

Ford FOCUS 2.0 Petrol M5+ Fuel Consumption & Efficiency | Cars

    Toyota Alphard 2.4 (159 hp, petrol, 2005) - Fuel consumption - combined

also the road tax is lower on the ford, if you want even more economical, the 1.6 is not bad either

    I just need a family car (5 seater), I don't need a big vehicle or 7 seater.

I have read in some other thread that Ford spare parts are expensive. Is that true?
