I think with Critical Mass they're not really raising awareness, they're just pissing people off which does more harm than good, but it's definitely not safe in HK for cyclists.

shri it may be harder to spot motorcyclists probably because you're not expecting them, but that usually ends much worse for the motorcyclist than you so give em some extra attention I usually assume people aren't going to see me and take that into account to not cause any dangerous situations, but it would be great if more people just assumed we might be there and had a little look.

I'd be perfectly happy if push-bikes had license plates (even if it was a small token amount), which allowed people to identify the clowns.
In most countries, bicycles pay road taxes.

Does the road tax cover all the cost of building and maintaining the roads. Yes, I didn't think so either. Does it pay for the cost of global warming? Does it pay for the reduced visibility? What is the last time you saw a blue sky? Does it pay for the pollution that I am forced to breathe? Does it pay for the noise I am forced to put up with? Yes? Where do I get my money?

Why do you car drivers think you have the right to pollute the world I am living in?

Having said that ... I do tend to give motorcyclists / bikes the middle finger as they tend to think that the gap between two cars, in the two lanes is a magical third lane for them, at the stop lights. If I am the first at the light, I've planned to accelerate and get away from the crowd ... if at that point, you sneak up from behind and try to beat me, it is an accident waiting to happen.
The "Magical third lane" is the best, just because you choose to drive a cage and wait in traffic don't hate on bikers.

What kind of a license do you need to privately drive a minivan in HK? It doesn't seem to be a normal driver's license. Seems to be some sort of lower level license given out to people with lower intelligence, or maybe lower motor control? People with no sense of depth perception? People who have nothing to do all day but change around parking spaces on crowded streets with spilled-over pedestrians? As slowly and aimlessly as possible, so no one can tell where you're going?

They really put pedestrians in danger.

There's a t-intersection near my home, and a lot of pedestrians need to cross in this area (with no pedestrian crossing). There is a stop sign for those arriving and turning at the intersection. Since it's helpful to pedestrians to get a chance to cross when the traffic stops at the stop sign, it's been a good way to see which drivers tend to follow this stop sign and which go through it (every time I cross I have to make a guess as to whether the cars are likely to stop or if they look like they're not going to ...). The private cars tend to be the worst, but actually the taxi drivers tend to be better as they know it's a trap that the police monitor from time to time.

I openly and loudly shout at drivers who do not use their turn signal when turning into a road I'm trying to cross as a pedestrian. I get really mad if they start suddenly turning towards me when I assumed it was safe to cross because they didn't have on a turn signal... It's a pretty serious safety issue that I wish the police (government?) would try to stamp down on more...

Is there a thing in Hong Kong to film bad drivers and send the film to the police? Would the police follow up and fine the drivers?

One thing you need to accept about Hong Kong, even the government knows what it's own population is like. Lets look at food hygiene in this place, fark me, if I were to use Paris, or Melbourne levels of food handling & Kitchen scrutiny of any random kitchen in Hong Kong, they'd be closed down by the end of it. It isn't a god given right that you can serve food, if you cant do it properly you get shut down. real simple back home. The industry doesnt tolerate it, like it does here. No pride, just profit, the HK way he he.

The government here will treat the public light mini buses with the same level of lethargic inactivity, that they do with food and hygiene practices of Hong Kongs F & B industry. If they cracked down using first world accepted hygiene inspection standards, you would literally have nowhere to eat ! ( I am not joking,) ... Ditto mini bus drivers, you would have none if you actually enforced the rules and regs on them.. So.... they don't..obviously !

    Brilliant isn't it...

Now keep harping on how amazing this city is, I'll keep reminding you how bent it is....

Worst are Mainland dual plates, taxi drivers and BMW drivers. Pricks the lot of them. Honourable mentions to most minibus and Audo drivers too.

I saw a guy today in a MB take a turn off of a round about, stop, and try to make a u turn. Fifteen vehicle slam on their brakes while this guy makes a 3 point turn. The look on this guys face was like" What?!? I'm not going to drive one block to make a u turn legally".
