Parking Tickets to go up 40% ...

Illegal parking fines could go up by 40pc on Hong Kong’s crowded streets | South China Morning Post

    21 years of poor governance...

But with selective enforcement will it make a difference?

The selective enforcement bit is an absolute pain in the arse.

I was waiting on a side street in Tin Wan and a cop came up to me and asked me to move .. "I am implementing traffic control". I asked her if she was going to ticket the 10 cars who were also parked on the same side of the road (many of them unoccupied). Another meat vendor had put crates out blocking a couple of car lengths for their delivery truck.

Stupid woman got flustered and to irritate her, I told her I'm just going to circle around and come back, by which time all the cars she's moved will also be back.... Irritated the hell out of her...

But sure enough 2 mins later, all the cars were back and the unoccupied cars were not ticketed AND the meat delivery truck had arrived and was unloading.

In Wong Chuk Hang, the cops come around a few times a week, make noise .. all the trucks circle back and occupy the same spots they were moved out of.

We have a lot of friends who find it cheaper to get 3-4 parking tickets a month than to pay for parking where they live.

It's incredible selective in Central, especially on Ice House Street by the side of the Mandarin, and outside Prince's Building on the Chater Road side.

So she didn't give you the ticket in the end? Lucky you. Be careful about trying this method on all police. Some of them will give it you (or maybe jack it up with other traffic offences) because you irritated them by asking embarassing questions.

I know when to stop arguing and start smiling and waving... most of the time ...

Where I work the traffic wardens come round 1 or 2 times a week, so even with the increase in fines I still save in a worst case scenario ~$700 a week by chancing it on the street.

I personally think traffic wardens and police are fair and reasonable in regards to parking tickets, compared to UK, at least they tell you to drive off to avoid the tickets, in UK, they have a commission incentive to issue as much tickets as possible

Have often wondered how much better the parking situation would be, if the parking wardens took a photo (to prove legitimacy of the ticket) and then issued a ticket and got a commission?

$448 is not going to be a deterrent to the tycoons' drivers in Central. Clamping and towing the car away might have an effect though.
