When I left Hong Kong, I left my Tesla Model S that was delivered in October 2015 with a good friend who uses it infrequently just to maintain the batteries charge. Back in May, the main computer screen turned black and while the car would start and drive, there was no AC or other computer controlled functions. So he took it into Tesla for me and guess what they qouted for a new "MCU"..... 60 thousand HKD..... it's a good thing my good friend is a negotiator and told them how ridiculous that sounds to need a 60k replacement part. So after a bit of back and fourth, Tesla offered a refurbished unit for 5k!
The icing on the cake? The Tesla rep saying "well ah.... HK people usually just replace with new parts not used ones" (my friend is Caucasian)
Just FYI if this happens to you and you want to save cash (or just be a reasonable person), ask for a refurbished parts don't let them push the idea on you that you MUST buy brand new parts if they're ridiculously priced
