Hello! Want to move to Hong Kong and start travel agency there. Is it possible?

do you have a visa that allows you to live and work in hk? if not, i suggest you look at the immigration website FIRST, read it, then come back and ask questions.

HK has many travel agencies and with online booking so much more convenient, this space is likely to decline in the future. However, if you are a travel agent that could offer exceptional service, be proactive and well researched and generally on-the-ball you might find a space in the business travel market. Sadly, your opening post gives no hint of this.

Just a wild guess from the OP's name, is this related to the Kazakhstan national airline (sorry, forgotten its official name) starting a direct service to Hong Kong?

Olga, if this is so, and you believe you have the special skills necessary for promoting Kazakhstan and other nearby countries, as well as special knowledge and skills in having visa applications for the region processed, then it is possible that an established agency (probably specialising in "adventure" tourism) will consider sponsoring your visa application. This would be much easier than setting up your own agency in a place where laws and customs are so totally different.

The government requires all travel agencies to be licensed and registered, and be a member of the local trade council. Here is its relevant website: Travel Agents Registry

Look at the INVESTHK website (also government) about starting a business in Hong Kong, submitting a business plan, setting up a company, getting the relevant visas, etc.

So if you were thinking about turning up in Hong Kong, renting an office and placing a "Travel Agent" sign outside, you're out of luck.

I thought travel agents were going the way of Kodak, DVD rental stores, and the dodo bird. Why would you want to get into this kind of business now?

Exactly! Get a sponsorship deal with Borat and I am sure the agency will do well.

My name has nothing to do with Kazakhstan!
Any way thanks for the comments. Some info I already know and some are new.

What would be cool is if Geo would lease a coach once a month and pick a destination in China, leave Friday eve. return Sunday afternoon. Special rates for members!!

That would be a cool meetup group!!
