I pay 200 HK$ with China mobile. Free GPRS data roaming in China until you reach 5Gb.
You also can get up to 9 additional SIM cards that share the 5Gb data.
Data only SIM 40$/month, data and calls 80$/month.

By GPRS do you mean 2G?

other than PCCW, others like China Mobile all seem to have a cheap 3G plan with unlimited data.

today, saw an ad at China Mobile for 4G. $298 for 10 GB. not sure about the exact number, could be off by $100, so it maybe $398 a month.

if $298 for 10 GB, then pretty good deal if you ask me. go check it out.

Unfortunately yes, because China Mobile does not support the HK 3G system.

Wow! Is it even possible to reach 5GB in a month using 2G? On the occasions that my connection has dropped to 2G here in HK, even my Whatsapp has struggled to maintain a connection.

China Mobile does have 3g, it rents it from PCCW.

It may or may not work on 4G where available in China, but I only have a 3G subscription. Their 3G in China is not compatible. You would need another phone.

Probably not through 2G in China. But when in HK on 3G it may be possible. I never need more than 500 M though.

If anyone here is looking for inexpensive, unlimited data/voice service then China Unicom HK could be the answer for you. My wife has been using them for the last 4 months and the service has been good overall except for a service outage that lasted about 24 hours one day. Here are the pros and cons:

    Pros:
Unlimited 3G data in HK with FUP (fair usage policy)
Free limited data in China (depending on plan)
    Cheaper than all major competitors
Big telco (127.15B Market cap at the time of writing)

    Cons:
    No voicemail
    Customer service only in Chinese
Up to date information only available in Chinese
Fewer shop fronts than other major carriers

    Voice/Data Plans (Chinese):
    香港聯通全球服務_3G一卡兩號,香港 遊,跨境通信,香港旅遊卡,香港無 上網,國際數據專線,IPEL,IPLC,IDC 國際語音轉接
