    cheap international phone

    Hi,

It used to be that there were many services that offered low cost idd calling, these days whatsapp has taken most of the market, however not all places or people have whatsapp or even internet (yes I know..)

So i am asking if there are any recommendations for a low cost way to call obscure places from HK on an ad-hoc basis?

    Thanks
    M

Define and give specific info on what you consider "OBSCURE PLACES" ???

i still use skype for actual overseas calls to landlines (typically customer call centres, not to vote in American Idol)

I use: https://www.mytello.com/en_HK/ You just have to load it up with some credit first.

There's probably other similar services around but I haven't looked into them. Probably won't either as calls so far have been cheap, clear and stable. Though note that if you're going to be on the phone for over an hour it sometimes cuts you off at the hour mark.

Skype is excellent. You can top up your account with eg $10 and then you can make a call from your Skype number to any landline or mobile number in whatever country you choose.

I have a neat little trick on my smartphone. I use Voipfone and OOMA Telo which lets me use a very inexpensive UK and a US phone service on my smartphone and look like I am calling from a US or UK land line!
