Reduce prices? Guess you’re not from the UK then?

Different environment. HK's economy relies on cheap labour subsidised by public housing.

I've never particularly liked Uber - the service overseas is very spotty e.g in Buenos Aires, most drivers will cancel on you, and when you get a driver they will ask you to sit up front to pretend to be a friend in case they get attacked by 'legit' taxi drivers. Even last week in Barcelona, very slow. Easier to just hail a cab and about the same price.

In contrast Grab is good, and Didi is actually amazing.

There are plenty of people in the UK barely scraping by on UK minimum wage with shit, infrequent and expensive public transport. Just to get into a taxi now you’re looking at 80HKD. Public transport, even for those on the breadline here is phenomenal and taxi, if the need arrives is cheap.

I assumed you were complaining that HK Taxis were underpaid

That article is typical Standard BS.
They claim HK is 50pc (%) more expensive than SG and make this claim as proof in the article:
"A ride from Wong Tai Sin to Tseung Kwan O, covering 13.98 kilometers in 23 minutes, cost HK$142 while a comparable taxi ride in Singapore took 24 minutes over 15.7km, costing about HK$98, including a 25 percent peak surcharge, totaling approximately HK$136"

none of that makes any sense.

Indeed it doesn't. Taxis (or Grabs) are way more expensive in Singapore.

The big issue is it's almost impossible to hail one on the street any more. They don't stop on the road. They don't stop at the taxi stands. They don't look for customers. They 110% depend on the apps to get fares.
