    Air Conditioner Cleaning (Mixed Messages)

Hey gang. I just got 2 air con units (one window, one split) replaced by DSC. I wanted to take care of them but the salesguy said that I only need to clean the filters. He said not to clean the other stuff since the chemicals they use ruin the machine. He went on to state that each time his clients get their air cons cleaned they end up having problems within a year. I have been told by many that you should get each unit professionally cleaned once a year but now i'm a bit hesitant. What do you guys think? Are there companies that use non-corrosive chemicals? Should I just learn to do it myself?

Buy a can of cleaning spray available at e.g. japan home and you can do it yourself.

I would just replace the air filters. I recently had an A/C cleaned by a "professional" and it became a jet engine after.

I'm actually a little reluctant in putting and other filter in my aircon, as there's so little room for one and I think it would make the aircon work harder in trying to pull the air through them.

I asked my maid to clean the filters in the air cons (just prof cleaned last year) and it was much colder. No need to get prof cleaned every year.

For the window air con all you need to do it clean the filter and any dust around the edges. Other than that leave it be. For the split, same goes for the filter, wash them out regularly to avoid overworking the unit, and to prevent mould.

In addition on the split, once a year I unplug the drip hose that discharges outside and poke a flexible cleaning brush down it, with some bleach on the brush. This hose can be prone to blocking with mouldy gunge which will then cause your air con to leak from the fan part.

Dont touch anything else, or use one of those "professional" cleaning companies, they are a ripoff.

I had my aircon's cleaned professionally 2 years ago. You should do that to keep the machine clean and hygienic. Depends on who you use to clean the machines. The one I used worked well and the aircons are working perfectly.

If you have safe access to the split ac condenser unit (the outdoor bit) you should clean the coils at least once a year. I did my main unit last month and it was plugged with dust...huge amounts of air need to flow past these coils to facilitate efficient cooling and prevent premature failure...of course if you're on the 40th floor that poses a problem...

In terms of super levels of noise, or in terms of super level ability to cool your home? Or both?
