    TV mount & wall thickness

I'm looking to buy a 55in TV and have it wall-mounted in my rented flat. Never had a wall mounted TV before. When I went to the new Xiaomi store in Causeway Bay and asked about their installation service, the guy gave me the brochure and circled the part stating that they won't mount anything if the wall isn't 20cm thick at least. I think I have pretty standard, sturdy concrete internal walls in my 1970s building, it never occurred to me that they might not be suitable, but I measured them and they are under 20cm. Is this over-cautious fine print, or is it sound advice I'm likely to hear from any other TV brand I contact about wall-mounting?

Concrete walls in Hong Kong should not be a problem for wall mounting a TV, except drilling holes is a pain in the arse and needs a hammer drill. I have no idea why they would tell you this 20cm rule. Sounds like nonsense to me, you only need to drill a hole about 5cm.

In other parts of the world, walls are built with brick, or sometimes internal stud wall filled with insulation and covered with plasterboard. These are also no problem, just need a stud finder to make sure you drill into the timber stud and not supported solely by plasterboard.

We are in a 40+ year old building and have a heavy 50kg+ 10 year old tv on the wall .. no amount of creating measuring would put that wall at 20cm depth.

many older flats/low rise flats will have internals walls constructed with 100mm brick/block, particularly village houses that have been modified. medium rise and high rise buildings are typically constructed by pouring reinforced concrete in all the walls at the same time, its tricky to pour RC into skinny walls, so they end up being at least 150mm thick.

Glue some bricks to the other side of the wall just to be safe.
