What's with all these pointless comments?

Are some of you trying to say locals blame mainlanders over everything and that they shouldn't?

Not in what I've observed. Whenever you see someone is 'out of place' in public, the next thing you notice is them speaking mandarin. 100% of the case.

I don't get these odd comments trying to refute the blame.

Eating/drinking in MTR is not even the issue. It's pushing a pregnant woman. Why is this comment even in this thread?

Are you trying to associate a small thing expats do and relief what the mainlander did in that news article to point out how unreasonable normal HKer's accusations are?

    You're a horrible politician.

Even when it's a mother holding the hand of a young child on an escalator?
Yes, child should stand in front of the mother, or something.

I almost went a over t the other day when, exiting the TST MTR station during rush hour, a woman with a pre-teen stopped dead at the top of the escalator in front of me and bent down to tie the child's shoe-lace....and I'm not even going to mention what happened behind me as at least four steps with two people on each came to a dead stop. Only with some pretty nifty footwork did I get away without injury and luckily in trying to get past her I managed to move her sideways and create a channel for those behind.

Ta ma de came in handy right then!

Why can't the kid stand in front of the mother? My nephews have been standing in front of me or my wife on escalators whenever we've taken them out since they were old enough to walk.

When we're walking on narrow sidewalks, they also walk in front of me. Holding their hand, walking with them on one side, and expecting pedestrians coming from the opposite direction to hop into the road and take their chances with taxis, minibuses, et al. is unreasonable given that they can simply walk in front of me with my hand on their shoulder.

When they were too young to walk steadily, we carried them. Before that, they rode in strollers.

Well in many regards the UK and HK are similar. A lot of the mainlander Europeans come to UK to buy luxury goods (such as cider), do number 2's in pubs and take advantage of the superior climate.

I agree, with the brusque manners of the average HongKonger, they should be the last ones in the world to critique their mainland brethens. But we are not talking about an objective scale of who is and is not civilized. The crux of the matter is that mainlanders do not fit into the notion of HKer's conception of social norms which is the cause of the conflict.

Even if the social norm in HK is not much better than the mainland in terms of "civility", the fact of the matter is that the mainland culture and customs don't fit with those of Hong Kong. This threatens Hker's sense of identity and hence resistance occurs.
