Police & Indonesian Consulate Detain Eriwana Upon Return to HK

Erwiana, the Indonesian helper who was allegedly tortured for 8-months by her Hong Kong employer, has been taken against her wishes to the Indonesian consulate after returning to the city this afternoon. Erwiana had previously accepted an offer of secure accommodation from the NGOs who have been assisting her since January and initially resisted police efforts to take her to the consulate. She was separated from her father and complied with the Hong Kong authorities after they threatened to deport her.

Bizarre. She is entitled to a 30 day visa as free person. She has done nothing wrong and yet been detained by her own bloody embassy, using the Hong Kong police as muscle.

Weird. Could it be that the HK authorities did not want her "stirring up trouble" by her presence in HK and so gave the consulate the choice of "you look after her or we will deport her"?

I don't think she is entitled to a 30 day visa is she? That is at the discretion of the immigration authorities isn't it?

    From the SCMP:

"Amid a heavy police presence at the airport, Hong Kong police allegedly told them that if they do not cooperate they would be sent back to Indonesia, according to Erwiana’s companions."

"A police spokesman said they had arranged Erwiana to stay in the country’s consulate general premises under police protection based on the consideration of the provision of effective protection."

This story just keeps on getting more and more fcuked up.

Both HK and Indonesia, who don't want their lovely little earner being screwed up by some unfortunate little abuse and torture case.

Indonesian Govt, you are feckin useless, seems they want to hush her up and probably threaten her as well so that they dont get sued also. WTF

Campaigners fear Indonesia may be attempting to control the narrative as an ‘isolated incident’ in order to minimise bad publicity and prevent any challenge to existing rules surrounding migrant workers. Hong Kong authorities may have also enabled an obvious conflict in that Erwiana may choose to sue the consulate further down the line.

As noted above - this is an utter disgrace. What on earth are the police playing at?

There seems to be this mentality in SE Asian nations (the Philippines is the same) that the consulates have some sort of right of control over their citizens in foreign lands. This is absolutely wrong, and it it outrageous that the HK police are supporting this clear breach of her basic human rights.

I can't begin to understand the thinking that went into this. Or lack of it. It is the most illogical and stupid action to have undertaken. Hong Kong looks like ... like.... China.

Rob Tibbo (Barrister-at-law who advised Snowden when he was in HK) has said the actions by HK authorities are "shocking" and clearly a "conflict of interests": http://hkhelperscampaign.com/lawyer-...nt-of-erwiana/

    There's a protest tomorrow at 10am at Indonesia's consulate.
