China confirms what everyone already knew

    http://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/a...ng-white-paper

"Hong Kong’s autonomy is not inherent but depends solely on Beijing’s approval, while the city has no “residual power” not explicitly laid out in the constitution, the Information Office of the State Council said in the paper."

Another turning of the vicious cycle here. Both sides are gearing for a showdown over occupy central. All these threats and warning from Beijing only serves to harden and embolden the occupy central protesters. Beijing in turned would be compelled to even give harsher warnings which in turn further radicalize the Occupy Central folks.

Exactly. At this point they give so much publicity to the referendum and Occupy Central and are enticing much more people to take part with these kind of useless statements.

I thought China agreed to leave Hong Kong essentially unchanged until 2047?

How does that work with this new hardline stance they are taking?

It is very amusing the fear that occupy central has stirred up.

They must feel the CCP's grip is so fragile

How long before the judiciary comes under pressure to firmly apply the law and imprison dissenting voices?

Basic rule when it comes to China, the CCP cannot be trusted. All their promises are but empty shells. Everyone else is a mere tool that is expendable. Those too gullible will fall into their trap. Mao promised the Chinese diaspora that they will be respected and protected when they returned to the the new China, but what happened? Those intellectuals and professionals who returned were the primary victims of Mao's ideological abuse.

Sure, Maoist ideology and class struggles are long gone, but in other respects the CCP hasn't really changed. It is an authoritarian power that schemes and manipulate others to their advantage.

You see, the CCP is very clever. They bent over backwards with assurances and promises that HK's autonomy will be respected in the immediate pre-handover days. And they kept relatively quiet during the early years of the SAR administration. It is only now when the world has turned their attention away from HK, when the city is in their full grasp, that they reveal their true colours.

Shows how concerned they are about recent events in HK (4th June and Occupy). It also shows how powerless and irrelevant CY and his cronies are.
