Week 10 of Occupy Central: Updates & Discussions

Andy Tsang is probably still upset about being blamed for the initial use of the tear gas. Especially when CY told the media that he relied on the police force's expert judgement in deciding the use of the tear gas.

This time, he was taking photos with his phone.

Fixing a small but significant error I made in my previous post with the addition of the missing word:

If the rank and file aren't happy with some of the more militantly political orders they're given, they could at least show a little less enthusiam when wielding their batons and pepper spray cannons against crowds of peaceful if civil-disobedient civicians.
From what I've seen the top brass of the whole security apparatus are sticking with the hard "party line" with Lai, Tsang and the talking-head Hui-sir using very loaded language about the protesters. They set the tone which has done little if anything to restrain the actions of officers in the field. While some individual officers are clearly trying to be calm and conciliatory, many others seem to revel in the "let's get them!" herd mentality.

Trust me I feel for the officers who joined the force based on its past fine reputation and are now forced to consider some unexpected options not conducive to their long-term livelihood plans or to just suck it up and follow the political orders.

Journalists and reporters with jobs in the mainstream media are face with the very same dilemma.

If there's to be a switch to PRC-style "socialist" system of a fully controlled society I'm afraid it's not going to be a painless transition and I hope the journalists, police officers and other citizens of the "silent majority" don't wait until the change is irreversible before making a stand.

PLA Plans to Suppress Occupy Central Movement as HK Police | The Real Hong Kong News

According to a source close to the decision making officials in Peking, China Central Government established a dedicated headquarter in Shenzhen in the second half of 2013 to deal with the Occupy Central Movement and the “anti-China meddling Hong Kong” individuals. The key members of this HQ are the head of PLA Hong Kong Garrison, the members of Public Security of China (Gongan) and Ministry of State Security that have successfully penetrated into Hong Kong Police Force.

Hong Kong: Heavy-handed policing will only inflame protests | Amnesty International

“The heavy-handed approach by police violates the protesters’ rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, and risks exacerbating an already tense situation,” said Mabel Au, Director of Amnesty International Hong Kong.
“Police Commissioner Andy Tsang must not turn a blind eye to the use of excessive force by his officers. There needs to be an unequivocal message from the top that any officer violating human rights will be held to account.”
“Police must not only act within the law, they must also be clearly seen to do so. The apparent removal of identity numbers, and the obstruction of journalists from reporting, raises serious questions as to whether the police want to avoid scrutiny,” said Mabel Au.

Students and Scholarism call for gathering

    30-11-2014

The Federation of Students and Scholarism have asked people to gather in Admiralty on Sunday evening.

Speaking in Admiralty, Scholarism member, Derek Lam, called for them to bring along umbrellas, masks and other protective equipment. He did not reveal further details.

No other core members of the organisations were present.

Interesting - Derek Lam is a senior member, but not one of the spokespeople (Oscar Lai and Max Lau are the spokespeople). Oscar Lai also leads the chanting and is the number 2.

    Large crowds expected in Admiralty

    30-11-2014

Large crowds of pro-democracy protesters are expected to gather in Admiralty this evening.

Scholarism has called on protesters to bring along umbrellas, masks and other protective equipment. But it did not give further details. Earlier, the Federation of Students had said this could be another "turning point" for the Occupy Movement.

Sources have told RTHK that the student groups may want to storm the Government headquarters, forcing the police to make arrests and clearing the whole occupation area.

The vice-chancellor of Baptist University, Albert Chan, appealed to his students not to risk their safety.

Wang Dan fears bloodshed in Hong Kong protest

    30-11-2014

An exiled mainland dissident, Wang Dan, has said he was worried that there will be bloodshed in this evening's rally.

He said if the SAR government cracked down on the protesters, he would join hands with international human rights groups and demand the Chief Executive C.Y. Leung to be tried in international court.

Mr Wang was a student leader during the 1989 pro-democracy movement in Beijing. He is currently living in Taiwan.
