Is safe to come to HK?

    Hi guys,

I am doing my PhD in the UK and thinking about looking for jobs in HK. I was born in mainland China and immigrated to Denmark with my parents in 2001. I can understand a bit Cantonese, but I can only speak Mandarin, English, and some Danish. I am a bit worried that I may get discriminated or attacked in HK. I was wondering if you know whether it's safe to come to HK now? How's the situation there?

    Cheers.

If all else fails just say you're from Taiwan but refrain from give away behaviour like doing the Mainland squat

please be aware that Hong Kong is not in a list of the top 10 safest cities in the world:

    So be warned.

    In reality you'll be fine.

Many guys doing their post-doctorate here dont speak cantonese too. Dont worry. Or you can speak with heavy Danish-accented Engish here.

I feel safer in HK than I do in your average US city or in the UK for that matter.

Personal safety is not generally an issue in HK compared to other major cities of similiar size.

In fact, academic society in HK is dominated by people from the mainland. You will fit in even better than local people. If you don't mind, may I ask what's your field? Mechanical/Electrical engineering by any chance?

It's perfectly safe. You'd be fine. You'd probably be viewed by HK locals as a sea turtle of sorts, a hai gui . A returnee from the West.

    You'll be completely fine.

Unless of course, one of your hobbies, for whatever reason, involves spending time wheeling suitcase around the New Territories near the border.
