9 of 12 electrical cable samples fail fire test

FactWire: 9 out of 12 electrical cable samples from major brands in Hong Kong fail fire test

The 12 samples FactWire obtained in the past six months include six from Tuen Mun Hospital, three from the residence halls of City University of Hong Kong (CityU), two from the Choi Tak Estate in Ngau Tau Kok and one from the construction site of Hong Kong Children’s Hospital in Kowloon Bay.

...they were sent to a laboratory in the Netherlands owned by Dekra, a testing, inspection and certification services provider, last November to undergo the British Standard BS6387 Category C tests, which require electricity cables to maintain power supply for three hours in a 950-degree fire.

...results show only three samples met the required standards

And its not just about using cheap china cables.

The samples cover five major cable brands, including Chinese-made Hong Kong brands MAS and Keystone, British-made Italian brands Prysmian and Draka as well as BICC from the United Arab Emirates.

Why would you want the electrical cables to maintain power for 3 hours in a fire?

Silly question! If you are in a burning building of course you need power for your router for uploading that fire video before you die.

every high rise building with a lift has one lift designated as the firemans lift, to get the fire fighters to the fire quickly, better hope those electrical cables are fire rated and as said, the cabling runs through the whole building, including the area of the fire, and essential services such smoke extract fans, staircase pressurisation, emergency lighting, etc. need to operate during the fire.
