You don't think this type of entrepreneurialism is what made Hong Kong such a great place?

To me this article belongs in the China basket case thread.

What's going on? I thought 'one-countyne system' now. So why can smugglers thrive between HK and mainland?
Any such smuggling between Tianjin and Beijing?

    No.

Agile arbitrage yes but not illegal trading

HK public pay the HK police a lot of money. I'm sure there are good reasons why large scale smuggling of meat and other consumable is allowed but I can't think of any.

    Every form
of representation of Hong Kong's civil society must be extinguished.

Pastor Niemöller never mentions expats who collaborate with the "establishment" so... big sigh of relief, right?

Its now reported in the HKFP:

    https://hongkongfp.com/2021/08/12/ju...-innocent-man/

An isolated case? Or a more worrying sign of the times? The fact the conviction was overturned on appeal provides some relief that some aspect of our justice system still works at least. But I gotta say the fact this case has gotten so far, despite clear signs of innocence of the accused, doesn't lent confidence to HK's rule of law in the future...especially with cases that are of...shall we say...a "political" nature.

Just to clarify, I like your comment not the article. You are spot on I think.
