Coming soon to HK: Electric car sharing

    From Hobabike:

Bike rent firm plans to start electric car sharing - RTHK

Joseph Sung said he expects to initially have 500 electric cars rented out in a similar way to timeshare properties, so multiple families will be able to share the right to use the vehicles over a fixed period of time.
On the contrary, he believes the sharing of electric cars will help reduce congestion in the long-term.

Why do people keep putting out money to try things here... We ALL know how it will end. (With more stuff trashed, too...)

How Gogovan ever managed to escape the fate of a good idea in Hong Kong, I don't know...

I believe FoodPanda and Deliveroo are also doing quite well in HK, aren't they?

In case no one notice, I'm already sharing a chauffeured driven car with others on Uber but I suspect its more of a stunt

This is not a new concept and it does work extremely well in some cities. This one is an example of a very popular one:

The challenges in Hong Kong are parking/charging stations and associated costs, excellent affordable public transport options and a pool of driver that might be relatively small. That's 500 more cars on the road and considering that buying a car in HK is often more for status than convenience, I'm not convinced that people will forego buying a car to use this service.

In the canadian service above, you can match public transportation costs easily if you are with another person and it's much cheaper than a taxi or Uber with significant time saving and the option to go as far as you want with the car. All things that may not be true in HK.

We have zipcar in the UK, seems to be a viable model so far but then again HK is very small.

It will clearly fail as space in Hong Kong is controlled by property developers. Parking requires space. If they formed a JV with 3-4 of the property developers it would be wildly successful.

this outfit is specifically offering timeshare, an Uber driver would have join a lot of syndicates to be able to work continuously
