The team said on Tuesday that at the West New Territories Landfill, it found 50 times the recommended level of the commonly used antibiotic, ciprofloxacin.
Chung said antibiotics may not be decomposing as readily as people previously believed, with traces still evident after 20 years.
"We only tested three, but there are 11 more closed landfills in Hong Kong and two more active landfills. So the amount of discharge that contains antibiotics is likely to be multiples times of what we have found."
