Car crashes involving elderly bus & taxi drivers have tripled in a decade

Three times as many car crashes involving Hong Kong’s elderly bus and taxi drivers than a decade ago
According to the Transport Department, 2,466 drivers of taxis, buses and minibuses aged over 60 were involved in accidents in 2017, almost three times the figure of 859 in 2008. They accounted for 30.5 per cent of all public vehicle accidents in 2017.
There was no official record of how many over-70 licence holders were still working, but industry representatives said some professional drivers are over 80. There is no compulsory retirement age for minibus or taxi drivers.

Lawmaker and trade representative back importing drivers from outside city to get young blood behind the wheel.
How about training minorities who are already in HK and working in the delivery trade?

I sat in a mini bus going to Island Resort yesterday, the driver looked so old I didnt even know how he was still alive breathing, he was driving so slow and I was in a hurry, I could literally see time standing still and then he gets a phone call on his mobile OMMMMM FFFFFFF GGGGGGG

It was very tough seeing him drive and not very good as well.

It got to a point in our area that we'd skip one of the mini buses if we saw one of the elderly driver, who due to a back problem had a hard time looking up and at the road.

    Fixed it for you.

Wages and long unsociable hours means the minibus and taxi industry attracts people with time and expectations of very low pay - people who should be retired or working in a job that doesn't involve the safety of others.

To attract better drivers there needs to be

    - a legal cap on hours per day / week that can be driven
    - higher wages

The government has already shown how it feels about bus drivers with putting a cap at 14 hours per day driving time and no legal requirements for rest period before driving.

The only time the wages of minibus and taxi drivers goes up is when the executive branch raises the minimum wage. The minimum wage is decreasing in relative terms to the medium wage.

If you want better drivers lobby your LegCo members for better pay and conditions for the industry.... Obviously many would consider this a waste of their own time
