    Maternity leave in Hong Kong

    https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/...hief-executive

Looking to extend from 10 to 14 weeks.

Business community spells DOOOM, just like they spell DOOM when trying to get paternity leave from 3 to 5 days or when they spell DOOM over minimum wage or when it is DOOOM over MPF offsetting. Always DOOOOM for employers when anything benefiting people happens. However never any DOOOMMMM

As common as it is to demonise the "Business Community" - keep in mind that an overwhelming number of businesses in HK are small / family owned / S-not-even-M-Es.

There is a cost involved in finding a temp for 4 more weeks to cover for the person who is away.

Not the end of the world - but there are costs involved.

Sure, costs involved, but if no babies being born where will the future employees come from? China? I guess this is a NIMBY problem though.

Exactly. As I always say, who will fix your cancer when you're 80? Not your peers nor your parents. That's for sure.

No, this is the compliant press making some noise to make the CE look good next week at her Policy Address.

Meanwhile in a country not far to the south of HK, this week Congress voted to extend paid maternity leave from 60 days to 105 working days (120 for single mothers). 7 of the days can be transferred to the father giving him up to 14 days paid leave. There are exceptions for small companies and companies "in distress". Businesses who objected were told to "get out of the 18th century".
