    Have you just returned from a trip? Your card might have been cloned (physically in a restaurant / hotel etc) while it was not in your presence.

    Did you card company send you SMS messages to inform you of transactions if they happened online?

    Curious why you think this is related to the CX breach.

    I have no idea if it was CX or not, it is the same card I last used with them about a year ago. I have not left HK in the past 6 months.

    Of course it is next to impossible to say how this happened or who used my data. Fortunately the bank are working on it, I had 7 SMS messages one after the other so I called them up.

    A backup file from six years ago would only contain expired credit card details.

    how would you deal with it...

    • Address ==>move?
    • Date of Birth ==> reincarnate?
    • Name ==>get married and change your family name to that of your spouse's?
    • Nationality ==> naturalized to another country?
    • Telephone Number ==> get a new phone?
    • Title ==> get a PhD?
    • Travel Document Number ==> wait till passport expires?

    “The CX case may well result in ‘spear phishing,’ where stolen details are used to customise phishing emails, to make them far more target-specific and believable,” Gazeley said, adding that once personal information hits the dark web it can then be aggregated with other existing leaked data belonging to victims.

    My nitpick ... they should have got a proper PR agency and a decent wordsmith to craft that response.

    Feels like a 10 year old kid say "sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry" as opposed to any actionable / legit reassurances.

    (Notice, every para reuses 'sincere apologies'. Generally speaking, if your apologies are sincere, you follow up by explaining how they're sincere and why you'll not face that problem again.)

    Pisses me off when multi-billion dollar companies fall short in basic PR and marketing.

    Sorry, I should have left it to a real Canadian to explain how to say sorry.

    Cathay Data Breach - A Sincere Apology?

    (Please note - this is in the anti-productivity forum..)

    For context - https://geoexpat.com/forum/84/thread...ml#post3598353

    What would be a sincere apology, that would make you feel good about Cathay?

    I would personally feel happy if they published the leaked info for all their board members, on CX's website and told their customers that these board members had been subscribed to the free Experian giveaway, so there was nothing to worry about.
