Top HK banker named as woman who died after Botox injections

    https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/...ed-after-botox
She was certified dead at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei on Monday morning after collapsing at the clinic of 86-year-old Dr Franklin Li Wang-pong in Tsim Sha Tsui the previous day.
There is no retirement age for Hong Kong doctors. They can practise in the city as long as their name is on the register.

How do you die from Botox? Too many at once?

It should be utterly unsurprising that having your body injected with a toxin known as one of the most toxic on the planet by an elderly man could possibly result in your untimely death. All to conform to some ideal look that all too often ends up making people look like zombie freaks. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The Medical Council, an independent body that regulates local doctors, struck Li’s name off the practitioners’ register for five months after finding him guilty of professional misconduct on three charges in 2009.

They related to the death in 2003 of 70-year-old piano teacher Lam King-fong, who collapsed during a liposuction procedure at Li’s clinic and died soon after.
He already caused the death of a patient 15 years ago and was still allowed to practice

    BTX is not the problem

In cosmetic doses, Botox is extremely safe. Yes, deaths have occurred in the past but were mostly related to large doses used to treat huge masses of muscle eg in spastic muscle conditions in children. The LD50 (dose required to kill half of patients injected) is 'estimated' (no one has actually done the studies) to be in the thousands of units whilst you probably get less than 50 in most facial injections.

There is probably a lot to come out further in this case, but I'm sure just getting some Botox to the face was not what killed this patient.

, actually Botox is one of the few instances where the mechanism of action is pretty well known and is pretty specific in what it does. Compare it to say Aspirin which can have a myriad of unwanted reactions particularly in children.

I hardly think Botox injections will be made illegal. You just need to look at celebrites from the 90's or earlier and you will see just how expressionless and swollen their faces are - this is the Botox look that they believe makes them look better, but they actually look like monsters. Botox use is also prevalent in the normal population. I knew a young girl who used this and a pilot too. I'm sure plenty of professionals use it too judging by the swollen faces walking around Central

LD50 is usually tested on rats (obviously) so it's a good measure, but doesn't tell the whole story. Regardless, the constant push to medicalise healthy bodies for profit by drug companies should be resisted. It preys on insecure people who would be better off paying for some psychological help, and allows the advertising industry to continue to push unnatural beauty standards.

I agree with your points but they should be considered separately. The safety or otherwise of Botox, and the ethics/ psychology of cosmetic surgery.

The other problem with this case is somehow the media drags up the least knowledgeable 'experts' to give their opinions. Such as that Pharmacist and Dr Tse. I guess these are the only ones willing to appear in the press. The media are creating a panic over Botox which is also used safely in many non-cosmetic applications, whereas the real problem is that one doctor has done something very stupid and we don't know the full story yet.
