Drivers hold taxi-smashing protest over Uber

Drivers hold taxi-smashing protest over Uber - RTHK
Some drivers smashed up a couple of taxis with hammers outside the Department of Justice on Tuesday as part of a protest against ride hailing services, saying Uber is hitting their livelihoods hard
As part of the protest, they also enacted a scene showing a man snatching a bowl of rice from a taxi driver and smashing it on the road, while a person wearing a mask of Transport Secretary Frank Chan looked on.
some drivers have seen their incomes drop by 30 percent in recent years.

Trying to get a taxi anywhere near my home is hopeless. Unlike when I lived in Singapore and smart, safely driven taxis regularly passed through even remote locations. In "the sticks" Uber provides a service that HK taxis don't offer. It would be a backward step and reintroduce major travel issues for many HKers if Uber was banned.

Uber today, driver-less cars tomorrow. Technology is changing industries and smashing a couple of taxi's with hammers outside the department of justice is not going to change that. They will need to adjust to whatever the future brings whether they like it or not, and it's not only the taxi industry.

It probably won't happen, but a sensible approach would be for the government to offer something like a "Plate buyback scheme" that they do in Australia to compensate taxi drivers/plate owners that purchased these expensive plates a while ago, and then this can be funded by properly legalising uber/etc and adding a few dollar surcharge onto every ride for the next few years until enough funds have been raised to compensate all the drivers/plate owners.

    1 down, 18,000 to go.

Keep picking Uber, they'll have to lift their game or join them (a la Grab) eventually.
