Is HK's public transit deteriorating? Seems like it from afar given the frequent reports of serious accidents posted on GXP.

Don't think its deteriorating. Either law-of-average catching up or just the good old .. trouble comes in multiples thing.

Nah, just upgrading systems. Think of it in terms of upgrading to a new version of your OS. There is always a risk of glitches and failures, hence the need to backup before doing the upgrade. A real failure of the MTR system is a crash that involves the public. Hence the test runs.

For all the joking and complaining we do about HK public transit, it is truly world-class and something you sorely miss when you leave.

Signalling system blamed for Hong Kong MTR collision was also behind 2017 crash at Joo Koon station on Singapore MRT
SelTrac, also known as communications-based train control (CBTC), was installed on Singapore’s East West MRT line. In late 2017, two trains collided at the line’s Joo Koon station while carrying passengers.
According to the Singaporean government’s Land Transport Authority, the collision was caused by a “software logic issue” that prevented communication between equipment on board the train and trackside.

This French system occasionally goes on strike.

    Sounds good on paper though.

i think hk system is stretched..
the frequency of train is already packing it in.. peak hour is less than 2 minutes per train
the running of the train starts at 6am ends at 1am.. so you only have 5 hours less the time needed for train to move back to depot, carry out normal checks, maintenance..etc..

something would have to give once in a while.... maybe we need to shut it down every other month to run proper checks and maintenance..
