I think the teargas is all part of the HK experience and is probably going to be a regular occurrence for the next 28 years (until 2047) so the tourism board should look at embracing and turning it into a positive. Sure, some tourists might be turned away, but there are just as many others that would pay for this kind of experience. Think of the running of the bulls in Spain, or even the Stoning of the Devil in Mecca during the Hajj now, notoriously dangerous with 6 or 7 people per square metre all jostling for breath and trying to avoid being trampled to death.

I can see it now, tour bus with HK-themed gas masks ("HK: Asia's World Gas Mask). Small group tours of protesting hot-spots, souvenir chunks of bricks. Designer goggles...yup, the great entrepreneurs of HK can totally spin this one...

On another note - what NGOs are worth looking at to support in terms of protecting HK civilians who are caught up in this?

Be very careful. Lots of fake crowd funding appeals all over the internet.

Take your guests for a swim to the outlying islands.. water appears pretty effective against tear gas and you get some exercise.
