No Credible Evidence of VPN Blocking...

Rumors seem to have started from a poorly sourced article in the media.

Right now, no credible evidence of VPN blocking.

We however, continue to block many VPNs which are used by Nigerian Princes and spammers.

And if you do use a VPN, do make sure the VPN is not owned by a Chinese entity.

The concept that selective blocking of internet access is viable. I suspect we'll see pro-authoritarian figures suggesting some internet activities are suspended on safety and national security grounds in the coming days.

You need to build a groundswell of support.

Looking at my twitter feed, I suspect this rumor started with a promoted tweet by a VPN affiliate (they recommend services and get a sales incentive if you sign up).

Clearly someone is putting money behind this "rumor".
