Exactly. These people are time travelers. I wanted to gag so badly when I heard how satisfied I was about the police but then I remember that I was quite satisfied with the police A YEAR AGO.

Today, I don’t trust them a single iota.

I still trust them for non protester related stuff.
For example 2 burgalers were caught earlier today. 3 shots were fired after they tried to run the police over. Also earlier today there was a traffic accident near SSP, police were directing traffic. I still trust them to do that as well...

You trust them to do things that don't have any element of politics. That is damning praise.

They are paid to be impartial

LOL.. At least there is praise and trust in there. We can't always be negative. Although one quibble... Technically they are paid to uphold the laws agreed by the government.

What they do need is more deescalation training.

They had it with the British. One simple effective method is to simply engage any and all questions a angry person has and hey presto!

They are not paid to uphold the laws agreed by the government. Their purpose is stated as

The Hong Kong Police Force will ensure a safe and stable society by :

    upholding the rule of law
    maintaining law and order
    preventing and detecting crime
safeguarding and protecting life and property
working in partnership with the community and other agencies
striving for excellence in all that we do
fairness, impartiality and compassion in all our dealings
maintaining public confidence in the Force
